I earn my living as a professional video cameraman and editor but have served as an elected councillor for over 13 years
Born in Whitehaven, Cumbria, my parents both worked for the NHS. My mum was a district nurse while my Dad worked as an NHS manager.
I grew up in a small farming village and understand the struggles that rural communities face every week. I moved to Preston in 2001 to study Journalism and Media. After working for several marketing agencies, I founded my own company, John Potter Film, in 2019.
I live with my wife Becky and our Golden Retriever, Rocket. I consider Lancashire my home and am a proud supporter of Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Club.
I’m a trustee and volunteer at the brilliant local charity community centre, Intact. I’m blown away by the kindness, generosity and commitment by the volunteers and staff every day.
I always had an interest in politics but became active during the Tony Blair Labour Government. The late, great Charles Kennedy inspired me to get active and make a difference.
Since 2010 I’ve been elected 7 times on a combination of Preston City and Lancashire County Councils. However, politically, I think I’m best known for my community work and constant campaigning for residents. I’ve led the fight in campaigning for safer roads and getting new schools built.
I love campaigning and am consistently one of the top canvassers for the Lib Dems in the UK. In 2022 I won the 2022 Tony Greaves award for campaigning. I represented parts of the Ribble Valley for 9 fantastic years.
Join our team of volunteers today and make a difference. Thousands of Liberal Democrat volunteers up and down the country are helping to elect community champions, get a fair deal for people in Britain, and change the world for the better. Join the team and become a volunteer today.
